Needle Tatting

A simple and elegant technique which uses a long blunt needle instead of the traditional shuttle. Simple to work and learn, it eliminates the complicated hand movements and thread limitations. Virtually any thread or yarn can be used, with the material being used directly from the ball or skein. The needles come in three sets, each suitable for a specific range of yarn weights. All needle sets come with instructions.

Shuttles

The more common tatting technique in which the thread is wound around a small shuttle, the shuttle in turn used to make a sequence of knots on the working thread through somewhat difficult hand manipulations. The shuttle which is passed back and forth through a working loop should be small enough to handle between the fingers. This will generally limit the thread size to the finer threads, to avoid constant rewinding of the shuttle. A point or hook on one end of the shuttle is used to make a joining stitch and is preferred by some tatters. The experienced tatter will generally prefer a shuttle without a point as the point can be in the way of a fast moving shuttle. Accessory hooks are available which can be worn around the neck or on the finger.
